Far too often, people eat whatever they want to, and when health issues arise, they expect healing without making any changes in their lifestyle. ADONAI indeed heals. However, prevention is better than cure. Staying healthy results from healthy choices, whether physical, behavioral, emotional, or spiritual. Understanding yourself and food values and their effects will help you make better choices for yourself.
Commonly, people count the milk in coffee, tea, or cocoa as calcium for their bodies. However, these block the absorption of calcium. Calcium is very fussy about getting absorbed in the body and needs Vitamin D3 and C to help carry it in.
This year, I had to reduce the amount of tea and coffee I consumed to boost my low calcium levels. When there was no improvement, I had to consider long and hard the uncomfortable choice to stop ingesting both. I stopped coffee in March (2023) and tea soon after. As a reward, I lost a kg of weight over the month. Who would have thought that a cup of milk has so much toll on me? Now, I drink either only if I have no other choice. Water has replaced it, and it quenches my thirst better. Sometimes, I indulge in a hot cup of water and add a pinch of cummin or carom seeds, and that helps with digestion and soothes gastritis. Needless to say, I don't drink any sweet drinks, no matter how catchy the color, brand, or name. The sweetness dehydrates the body more than replacing the fluid it needs. Besides, excess sugar has too many negative effects on the body, and I can do without it. Often, I see people drinking sweet drinks with their food. It leads to quick satiety and does not allow you to eat a full meal. It defeats the purpose of eating good food.
Understanding your emotional quotient and upgrading where necessary will help build relationships rather than erode them. We can improve our response to correction and criticism without attacking the speaker for genuinely trying to help us.
Therefore, a good health assessment, discovering what needs course correction, and implementing changes will help one grow stronger and better.
Sleep deprivation leads to terrible headaches and the inability to cerebrate, think, learn, write exams, perform simple jobs, drive, or do anything except sleep. It is only when sleep is fully done does one wake up refreshed and renewed. If underslept, road, work, industrial, medical, and home accidents increase, leading to preventable injury, death, and losses. Last year, we heard of the unfortunate road accident and death of an associate. After lunch, he was driving with his young wife and two small children when he fell asleep at the wheel. The car fell into a ditch, and he and his son, around 2 years, died on the spot. His wife fractured her legs, and the baby she was carrying was seriously injured as well. Had he slept before leaving, this accident could've been avoided. This is not counting the grief and loss of the wife, who has to set about rebuilding her life from scratch after months of physical recovery and big medical bills.
Activity and exercise, even the minimum, improve our mental capabilities as we age. It gives us fresh ideas and boosts learning. It does wonders for our sleep patterns and moods. We work better at the desk and computer with daily exercise. It improves digestion and moderates hunger. To get my friend moving from her chair, in desperation, I told her to start walking just 5 minutes a day. I was sure she would move to ten minutes and more and get healthier and hopefully lose some weight. Within the week, she told me she slept better, and her bloating was gone. She was so motivated that she reduced the portion of food and gradually lost a sizeable amount of weight over six months.
Learning along the way, learning from our mistakes, and course correction help improve our lives one small step at a time. What we sow is what we reap. It comes back multiplied. Let it be goodness, generosity, kindness, forgiveness, good health, and wise lifestyle choices.
